Meteorological Spring kicked off on March 1, and anytime we talk about a storm system swinging through the country that conversation has to include mentions of severe weather.
So with that said, we’ll have a system swinging through late week with at least some severe weather chance — and a pretty tame week overall before that.
Summary
Overall, this is a pretty standard mixed bag week of March, with a quick hitting severe weather threat and a cold front that’ll drop temperatures for most of us below-normal. From there, cool/dry conditions may be the norm for a week or so on the Plains — though there are some signs of a secondary low coming through in the weekend that could spell another severe weather shot. But that most likely will end up east into the Southeast if it does materialize.
Right now I put the chances of some storm chasing for us at low, but not zero this week.
I wasn't expecting much on this day (May 27, 2023), but we chased anyways because it is May and you chase. Storms looked ready to take off very early in the day, but it seemed like as soon as they'd get going, they'd also then die.
As we moved through the afternoon, I was beginning to feel uneasy that maybe there was just not enough upper support to overcome the little bit of capping we had. But, just as soon as my doubts began to rise, storms took off. We chose the easternmost cell in a cluster of developing cells, which became an impressive supercell for a time near House, New Mexico, before the cap won towards sunset.
