Incredible tornadoes over the open high plains!
An incredible Colorado storm chase from this past chase season!
Ohhhhhh Colorado!
Like for real this state has been the bane of my chase existence since I started.
Colorado chases meant one thing: bust. Not just any bust, but the silliest and weirdest ways to bust. From no roads to get to the storm to a great looking day turning into aggressive rain showers in a hurry, Colorado has always been an ideal that never lived up to my expectations.
So you can imagine when I moved to the High Plains how nervous I was about the fact that Colorado was literally right next door and the promising beautiful tornadoes of the high plains were going to call me north. On May 22, 2021, I was indeed called north for what looked like a solid-ish day of chasing.
There were two targets, one on a boundary where storms were likely to get messy in a hurry but the odds of a quick tornado were high and then there was the riskier but possibly more rewarding target south -- where storms would be more isolated in an environment favorable for storm rotation and tornado formation.
Being that I already had a curse over my head I of course opted to skip the near guarantee for the riskier target south. What could go wrong? Well, as it turns out, not much on this day.
