The 2024 storm season is going to look much different than the past few. Check out our full forecast video here:
Overall, we’re favoring an above-average season this year, which feels notable since that’s the first time we’ve ever said that on one of these types of outlooks.
Here are some more quick thoughts, which are probably half right, half wrong:
Expect the season to take a bit to get going due to the ongoing and repeated cold/cool surges south. But when the season gets moving, it will get moving fast
I’m looking for the return of the regional ‘big day’ on the Plains this year. Look for at least one High Risk type of day.
Activity will be concentrated in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas this year. High Plains some activity late. If a storm chaser wants to chase in June this year, they’d better memorize roads in the Midwest vs. High Plains.
The dryline will be oriented near and just east of the historical mean most of the year.
Overall, our dumb forecast expects above-average tornado numbers this year. There is a slight downside risk to this forecast, but this might finally be an actual active season in Tornado Alley once again.
