2023 Severe Season Outlook: What to Expect in Tornado Alley
Don’t expect this year to be like the last three.
We published our 2023 Tornado Alley Spring Season Outlook last week. Watch it below:
While this is a broad seasonal outlook, there are several factors that could make this year a busy one for storm chasers.
Current indications are for a cooler/wetter March in the north and east parts of the country with a drier March over the high plains.
The cap will be strong-ish, so we’re watching what the drought does in the Southwest/High Plains in the next month.
The Gulf of Mexico remains warm at the beginning of March.
Climate models continue to indicate a slightly wetter than normal Spring across the Central and Southern Plains.
Overall, this year will likely be more active than the last three, which were some of the quietest since the last 80s in Tornado Alley. So even if the Central and Southern Plains have an average Spring, it will likely feel pretty busy, especially for newer storm chasers.
